Charles Alston

An artist of the Harlem Renaissance, Charles Alston was a leader of those who wanted change and did so through his drawings and paintings. One particular work was his "Barber", and it showed the common lifestyle of the African American people, and brought up the question of what was wrong with it.

Harlem Renaissance

The Harlem Renaissance was the result of The Great Migration, and the newly created black neighborhood of Harlem. Through the racial based violence, black authors started to put out their works of arts as a way of expressing and using the newly acquired political freedom and over all ability as citizens.

The period was the beginning and opening for many Africans, not only African Americans, but those from the West Indies and other English colonies at the time.

The two periods had similarities and differences, while both based around overcoming racial differences, the Civil Rights movement had more to do with obtaining the rights and fighting for them, where the Renaissance focused on using the rights to publish as intellectual equals.
